Flights between Perth and Sydney have largely avoided the major delays affecting Sydney airport today. This is despite almost 100 domestic or international services travelling from Sydney having been delayed or cancelled. The disruption was caused by staffing issues within Airservice Australia’s air traffic control operations, with a shortage of controllers forcing restrictions on the number of aircraft able to move through Sydney airport. Qantas has reported 50 delays and four cancellations, while Jetstar and Virgin Australia have also been affected, with 20 and 25 delays respectively. Airservices Australia introduced Air Traffic Flow Management measures to manage the reduced capacity while maintaining safety.
