“Burning peat with a predicted forecast of more heatwaves and strong winds is only going one way,” said Richard Bailey, coordinator of the Peak District Moorland Group and a gamekeeper for 33 years.
The Peak District is ringed by Manchester, Sheffield and Huddersfield, and on any dry weekend its moors fill with visitors, most are respectful, many are not.
