Southampton's secret lost department store, Bourne and Hollingsworth, brought Oxford Street glamour to the South Coast before quickly disappearing. Its adverts invoked the city's heritage, urging shoppers to let the Bargate lion point the way and 'come to Bourne & Hollingsworth for the happiest of shopping.' When it reopened as a Co-op in September 1970, its Southampton chief said Bourne and Hollingsworth regulars would not recognise the interior.
