Family and friends of the youth had been searching for him for over three hours to no avail, so the RCMP were contacted. Elk Valley RCMP frontline officers responded and were assisted by Cranbrook Police Dog Services. An RCMP drone operator was also requested along with Fernie Search and Rescue members. Just before daybreak the RCMP drone operator confirmed that they had been able to locate the youth, and he was assisted out of the wooded area.
