Natural plant dyes have long been praised as a cleaner alternative to synthetic dyes, but they come with one major drawback—they fade quickly. Now, researchers have developed a new dyeing method that helps natural colors stay on fabrics much longer without relying on metal-based chemicals that can pollute the environment. The textile industry has been searching for greener dyeing methods because many conventional dyes and dyeing chemicals contribute to water pollution. While natural dyes extracted from plants are biodegradable and generally have a much smaller environmental impact than synthetic dyes, they often lose their color after repeated washing, regular wear or prolonged exposure to sunlight. One reason natural dyes fade so easily is that they do not naturally stick strongly to fabric fibers.
