This week a pet microchip scanner station was installed at the Danville Police Department for use by the public at any time. The scanner is contained in a weatherproof box that is mounted to a light pole along the circular driveway at the front of the police department in the same area as our Safe Exchange Zone. A sign mounted above the scanner provides instruction for its use, including a QR code and link where the microchip number can be queried to determine who the pet is registered to as well as the local number to call to report a found pet. This publicly available resource was inspired by Deputy City Manager Earl Reynolds, who shared an article with staff on a similar installation in Chesapeake, and was made possible by the generous donation of three scanners and the station hardware by Best Friends Animal Society.
