Hundreds of endangered Western leopard toads are beginning their seasonal migration to breeding wetlands, prompting fresh calls for motorists to slow down and help protect one of the Western Cape’s most distinctive amphibians. For many Cape Town residents, the arrival of the striking Western leopard toad has become a familiar sign that breeding season is underway. Earlier today, Two Oceans Aquarium highlighted the start of the migration in a social media post, reminding residents that the Western leopard toad is found nowhere else in the world except the Western Cape. A species unique to the Western CapeUnlike many other amphibians found across southern Africa, the Western leopard toad exists only in the Western Cape, making it one of the province’s most recognisable endemic species. Unlike larger wildlife, leopard toads can be difficult to spot on wet roads after dark, making awareness campaigns especially important during the migration period.
