Grandfather, family man, librarian, volunteerGregory Bruce Shapton, 77, died July 25 after a life devoted to family, books, learning, and public service. In 1959, the Shapton family traded Midwestern winters for the sunshine and swimming pools of Whittier, California. After earning his bachelor’s degree from Pomona and a double master’s degree in library science and public policy from USC, he continued at Pomona Public Library, building a 44-year career. “During crazy eights, he delightedly chanted, ‘picka, picka, picka, picka’ as his children drew endlessly from the deck.” In retirement, he volunteered with Claremont After-School Programs, tutoring elementary students in Claremont public schools.
