London’s Shafkkat gets greedy on his latest self-released EP, gobbling up everything the capital has to offer: garage, bass, UK funky and disco all feature, but his own emotional anchors elevate the raw ingredients. ‘Girly’ is a loopy, excitable house number with a pitched-up vocal that floods you with all the euphoria of a prime salute cut. ‘In The Wind’ is tightly woven and with a touch of synth psychedelia and a melancholic nag in the vocal. ‘Tides’ featuring Jess Young is body-first and bass-heavy, but with sparkling arps like sunlight on water. An ambitious EP that could feel scattered instead excels in its classy hooks.
