A wildfire burning through Mount Bromo National Park in East Java, Indonesia, has destroyed more than 120 hectares of land since it broke out Monday, Aug. 3, 2026, local disaster officials said Friday.
The blaze, one of the largest to hit the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park since a 2023 fire scorched more than 500 hectares, comes as Indonesia enters an intensified dry season linked to El Nino.
A fire official identified as Bambang Setyo Antoko said the blaze has burned at least 127 hectares of national park land, an area equivalent to about 180 soccer fields.
The fire threatens one of East Java's key economic drivers, as tourism to the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park supports local businesses, guides and transport operators who depend on steady visitor traffic.
Officials said a formal determination on the cause could take several more days once ground teams gain fuller access to the burned area.
