Mansfield College has won the approval of Oxford City Council planners to demolish the John Marsh Building in Mansfield Road, a staircase and garden building. In its place, a four storey building and basement will be constructed to provide student accommodation and academic space. But Mansfield College, which moved to Oxford in 1886, has permanent Victorian buildings in Mansfield Road designed by Oxfordshire architect Basil Champneys and competed in 1889. Meanwhile, Hertford College is to redevelop the former junior common room within Holywell Quad in Catte Street to create a lecture theatre. Hertford College at the University of Oxford evolved in stages from the 1280s, with its main historic buildings constructed between 1887 and 1889 by architect TG Jackson, and its famous Bridge of Sighs added in 1914.
