The rivers in Monmouthshire are currently facing severe ecological strain due to elevated phosphate pollution, agricultural run-off, and sewage spills. The crisis primarily affects two major Special Areas of Conservation (SAC)—the River Wye and the River Usk—along with key tributaries like the River Trothy. Posting on Facebook, Mrs Fookes said she will be spending her summer touring rivers and meeting campaigners. Mrs Fookes said: “Our rivers are an absolute mess. And this summer, I’m touring our rivers and meeting with campaigners and groups who are doing incredible work on this issue.
