The Cayman Islands Airports Authority claimed in its 2041 masterplan that a $28 million runway extension at ORIA “is required to meet market demand for long-haul flights from overseas”. Meanwhile, the CIAA said the Westerly Ponds on the south side of the Brac airport runway, which are a haven for indigenous and migratory birds, will need to be filled to expand it by 75m. The National Conservation Council had determined that EIAs need to be completed for both runway projects. The assessment process, which will take around two years, will also involve a period of public consultation. The plan also included the development of a new airport on Little Cayman in a different location.
