['Mi News Network']
Marine Insight
Power Cell, which is a Swedish supplier of fuel cells for the maritime sector, has bagged a $4.25 million contract to deliver fuel-cell systems for 2 hydrogen-powered bulk carriers.
The order includes 14 of Power Cell’s Marine System 225 units, providing more than 3 MW of power, with deliveries scheduled for 2026 and 2027, to be constructed by GMI Rederi.
Each of the bulk carriers will be equipped with 7 Marine System 225 units, allowing them to operate without generating harmful emissions as they replace fossil fuels with renewable hydrogen.
They will be the world’s first hydrogen-powered bulk carriers when launched in 2027.
Torstein Holsvik, CEO at GMI Rederi, said that after evaluating technological maturity, green fuel availability and cost effectiveness, the company chose compressed hydrogen with fuel cells as the most viable option.
