Once in Uganda, each person will go through individual refugee status determination processes. But African countries have not always received such offers with open arms. Deporting nationals from other countries to African countries is, therefore, legally questionable – and diplomatically unpopular. It currently hosts 1.8 million refugees and asylum seekers, mainly from South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Some refugees have to go through individual refugee status determination processes where they face huge backlogs and access to justice issues.
