Calls grow for barbecue crackdown after Fire Beacon Hill blaze near disaster

Opening the discussion, Cllr Hilary Nelson thanked the emergency services for preventing what she described as a potentially far more serious incident.
She said: "Council assets are potentially very vulnerable to people smoking cigarettes and dropping cigarette butts, having barbecues and not properly attending them.
Cllr Rachel Perram questioned why disposable barbecues were still widely available despite the fire risks.
Cllr Nelson proposed referring the issue to the council's Environment Committee for further discussion.
Cllr John Nicholson added that several major supermarket chains had already announced they had stopped selling disposable barbecues.
