Released without warning on July 9, the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 ports of the classic shooters Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 and its predecessor Black Ops 1 have reportedly sold over 11 million copies combined. According to market estimates from Alinea Analytics, the 2012 hit Black Ops 2 moved an astonishing 8.2M copies on the PlayStation Store in July alone, generating approximately $325 million USD in revenue. The original Black Ops wasn't far behind, selling around 3M copies and adding another $110M to the pot. Essentially, Microsoft’s Xbox division managed to release one of the best-selling games of 2026 simply by having developer Iron Galaxy port two beloved PlayStation 3 titles over to modern Sony hardware. Players overwhelmingly prefer current-generation hardware for this trip down memory lane, with 93% of Black Ops 2 buyers and 94% of Black Ops 1 buyers playing on the PlayStation 5.
