The 2014 role that saved Ralph Fiennes from typecasting: “It fucks with your head”When Ralph Fiennes started his career, he immediately stepped into one of the most challenging and dark characters in existence, that of Heathcliff in the 1992 film Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights.
Luckily for Fiennes, then, the opportunity to separate himself from Voldemort came in the form of an unexpected role in a Wes Anderson film that he is forever grateful for.
As Monsieur Gustave H in The Grand Budapest Hotel, Fiennes was able to step into a more comedic, slightly campy role, illuminated in pastels and Anderson’s signature symmetrical framing.
Discussing the role, Fiennes told The Standard, “And people said, ‘He can be funny!’”
As a result of this comedic role, Fiennes was able to open himself up to the kinds of movies he’d never usually be offered.
