Containing a measles outbreak that produced 100 confirmed cases in New Mexico cost close to $5.4 million, according to a peer-reviewed analysis that puts a price on work most people never see. The cost analysis published in Annals of Internal Medicine accounted for medical care, the full public health response, and lost productivity across 100 patients, 205 exposed contacts, and 133 public health responders. The United States has already recorded more measles cases in 2026 than in all of 2025, meaning the response capacity this study priced is being drawn on right now in multiple states. The largest single block was the public health response itself, roughly $3.2 million, of which about $2.1 million went to vaccination-related activities. The total societal cost of containing a 2025 measles outbreak in New Mexico involving 100 confirmed cases, estimated at nearly $5.4 million, or $53,522 per case and $1,817 per contact.
