A pregnant woman was one of two people found dead following a remote siege, survived by a toddler dramatically rescued by police. The moment police defied “grave danger” and saved the child was detailed by Mr Vanderbyl, who on Friday confirmed the woman who died in the tragedy was pregnant. “It was at that point that police, quite rightly in my view, chose to tactically withdraw from that situation,” Mr Vanderbyl said. Child protection is determining the best care for the child, with family members on their way to the remote town, Mr Vanderbyl said. “Her life has changed in an instant, forever, as have the lives of many others from these tragic, tragic events.”
