Manufacturing industries that require both steam and electricity for their processes can—and indeed should—explore cogeneration. Consider an example: currently, steam is generated in a low-pressure boiler and sent directly to the process. The alternative—cogeneration—involves generating high-pressure steam, routing it through a back-pressure turbine to generate electricity, and then delivering the resulting low-pressure steam to the process. Essentially, the same energy source used to produce low-pressure steam yields both electricity and the steam itself. Investments in cogeneration are typically very attractive!
