Last month, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bipartisan bill to make daylight saving time permanent. Without Senate approval most of us will go back to Standard Time (Hawaii and Arizona haven’t had Daylight Saving Time since the mid-60s). The first dalliance with daylight saving time came in 1918 as a World War I measure passed by Congress to conserve energy. The last adjustment came when Congress extended daylight saving time by four weeks in 2005, although the change did not take effect until 2007. On the other hand, a Gallup survey found that 48% of Americans favored permanent standard time.
