Members and supporters of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) gathered in Borrans Park, Ambleside, to remember the lives lost in the US atomic bombing of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. The group processed from Waterhead to the Hiroshima cherry tree in the park, planted to mark the 50th anniversary of the bombing, and shared readings, poetry, and a period of silence. "We need a Government working for nuclear disarmament, not nuclear war. "We need a peaceful future for our children and grandchildren. Mr Gilligan added: "And, nearer to home, Andy Burnham's government declares its intention to squander ever more billions on nuclear weapons, whilst leaving essential public services to face daily crises and cuts."
