DULUTH — Duluth School Board members voted unanimously Thursday evening during a special meeting to add questions to the Nov. 3 general election ballot for a two-part operating referendum. “That time for the Duluth Public Schools is over.” Superintendent John Magas added that without changes to the district’s financial outlook, Duluth Public Schools could be facing “more significant” reductions in years to come, ranging from athletics, activity and program cuts to potentially closing one or more schools. “We will not be able to shield teachers and kids from those difficult financial cuts that we're going to have to make,” Durick Eder added. The second referendum question would further stabilize the district finances through additional operating revenue, opening the possibility of restoring some of the cuts made in recent years.
