Hate preachers should be forced into the shadows, an anti-terrorism commander has told the Royal Commission on Antisemitism and Social Cohesion, despite suggestions that they are easier to monitor in the open. Extremist leaders pose a significant risk by influencing individuals towards radicalism, the anonymous police officer told the Royal Commission on Thursday. Islamist extremism expert Rodger Shanahan previously told the Royal Commission he feared a further crackdown would make criminal preachers harder to catch. The police commander told the Royal Commission he respectfully disagreed. Dr Meger reiterated a key recommendation to the Royal Commission: that respectful relationships education begin in primary school.
