United States President Donald Trump has signed two executive orders aimed at limiting birthright citizenship, after the Supreme Court set aside his previous attempt. Following the Supreme Court’s June 30 ruling that declared his earlier executive order unconstitutional, Trump had urged Congress to pursue legislative action. However, he instead introduced fresh executive orders, which establish federal policy but do not carry the legal authority of legislation passed by Congress. The executive orders also seek to restrict citizenship rights for children born in the US to foreign government employees and individuals designated as “alien enemies.” Legal experts say it remains uncertain whether the measures can withstand judicial scrutiny in light of the Supreme Court’s recent ruling.
