The disease in question was amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, better known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease, a debilitating progressive nervous system disease. “Scientists still don’t know exactly what causes ALS, though they’ve been looking into pesticides as a possible risk factor since the 1980’s,” the New York Post wrote. The term “pesticides” is an umbrella term that includes more specific products, such as herbicides for weeds, insecticides for insects, fungicides for fungi, etc. They even acknowledged that other recent studies found only “some” or “weak” evidence of an association between pesticides and ALS. The findings of this review add to the evidence that occupational exposure to pesticides may increase the risk of ALS and should encourage the implementation of interventions aimed at reducing exposure during occupational pesticide use.”
