As a number of unconnected groups are planning to respond to the poor condition of the River Suir a public meeting is to be held in Cahir on August 26th. The meeting is being arranged following a committee meeting of the Cashel Golden Tipperary Anglers Association earlier this week. The “Save our Suir” meeting will take place in the Cahir House Hotel and is due to commence at 7.30pm. The River Suir, which drains a catchment of 3,542km² is facing severe environmental strain from low summer flows, heavy weed growth, and pollution. In addition, Deputy Michael Lowry says the Office of Public Works is committed to supporting a future funding application from Tipperary County Council under the Minor Works Scheme for as yet unspecified works on the River Suir between Thurles and Holycross.
