One-in-three patients spending more than 24 hours in emergency departments are over 75More than 27,000 people spent over 24 hours in an emergency department in the first six months of this year, with one-third of those aged over-75. Cork was followed by St Vincent’s Hospital in Dublin, where 2,630 patients spent over 24 hours so far this year, up from 2,064 in 2025. Typical duration times in ED were longest in Beaumont, where patients spent an average of 10.2 hours in its emergency setting. In Tallaght, average ED duration was 10 hours, while CUH patients spent an average of 9.4 hours in its ED. St Luke’s had an average ED duration per patient of 3.9 hours, while patients at CHI Crumlin spent 4.1 hours on average in emergency care.
