Community gathers to discuss toxic chemicals found under Richmond school campus
['Jodi Hernandez']
News – NBC Bay Area
On Thursday, parents, students and community members gathered at Richmond City Hall to hear directly from the school district, city officials and scientists with the Department of Toxic Substances Control following the discovery of toxic chemicals under a high school campus.
Scientists say the state has been testing the soil under streets in Richmond over the past few years.
They discovered contamination under the street 500 feet from campus; that’s when they decided to test the soil at campus.
They are now sampling the air to see the toxic chemicals have become airborne.
They’ll be analyzed on Aug. 13 and Aug. 14 and then a decision will be made whether allow students to attend school at Kennedy High or move class elsewhere.
