Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee (Mvac) has projected the number of food-insecure families to drop to 2.6 million during the 2026/27 consumption period, representing 14 percent of the country’s population. Reads the report: “The decrease in the number of food-insecure people is due to favourable climatic conditions characterised by normal to above-average rainfall during the 2025/26 growing season. “The Ministry of Agriculture has estimated maize production at 3 300 618 metric tonnes [MT] in the 2025/26 agricultural season compared to 2 859 948 metric tonnes in the 2024/25 agricultural season, representing an increase of about 15 percent. “The report has been issued in time this year, and it will help us coordinate response efforts with other stakeholders. Last year, the delayed response came about because the Mvac report was released in October.
