The Times, the authoritative voice of the Democratic Party establishment, does not devote 29 pages to movements that threaten the social order. New York Times columnist Ross Douthat interviews Bhaskar Sunkara, founder of Jacobin and a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, July 16, 2026. Sunkara is making an argument, addressed through Douthat, to the New York Times and the Democratic Party establishment: The DSA is no threat. Douthat translated: a pro-Palestinian stance marked a candidate as “a reliable vote for restructuring the Democratic Party overall.” Its first condition is the political independence of the working class from the Democratic Party and every party of the ruling class.
