The Australian Labor government unveiled a parliamentary inquiry on Tuesday into the country’s “national civil preparedness and resilience.” It is not dedicated to the military build-up in a general sense, or this or that aspect of the defence force. Darwin is at the centre of the US-Australian military build-up with seven military facilities in or near the city and a contingent of 2,500 American marines. But they have sought to shroud the military build-up behind closed doors. It raised the need to prepare the population “psychologically” for conflict and warned against purported threats to “social cohesion” in the event of war, including the culturally diverse character of Australia’s population.
