Ireland has announced a major investment to restore important marine habitats in County Kerry through a five-year biodiversity restoration project focused on protecting eelgrass meadows and native oyster beds.
Minister for Nature, Heritage and Biodiversity Christopher O’Sullivan has confirmed €7.9 million in funding for the Tralee Bay Marine Biodiversity Restoration Project, which aims to strengthen marine ecosystems, improve water quality and support long-term coastal resilience.
University College Cork researchers will work alongside fishermen, conservation groups and local communities to create a model for marine restoration that can be applied in other areas.
The initiative supports Ireland’s Nature Restoration Plan by demonstrating how research, conservation action and community involvement can work together to restore damaged ecosystems.
The Tralee Bay Marine Biodiversity Restoration Project is expected to begin in August 2026 and continue until 2031, creating a long-term framework for protecting Kerry’s unique marine environment while supporting sustainable coastal communities.
