Two dobermans stand guard on the cover of ‘Pure Devotion’. Long associated with fierce loyalty and protectiveness, they’re the perfect companions for a record that follows wonder wherever it leads, but never loses sight of what matters. Written in the isolation of the Icelandic mountains with little more than two synthesisers and an FX unit, brothers Ed and Tom Russell found themselves surrendering to curiosity. Every element seems to push against the next, as distorted percussion, vocal fragments and swelling synths all coincide. ‘Slowmotion’ extends that mischievous energy, scattering cartoonish sonic flourishes that continually wrong-foot the listener.
