Kenya has added 122 officers to its elite and highly secretive Special Operations Group (SOG), bolstering the country's specialised counterterrorism force amid a sharp rise in suspected Al-Shabaab attacks. "To confront today's security challenges, specialised training in intelligence-led policing, counterterrorism, multi-agency coordination, and the integration of technology is indispensable," Murkomen said. Special Operations Group (SOG) officers showcase a raid from motorcycles at the Kamanga Training Camp in Samburu County on Thursday, August 6, 2026. SOG officers are deployed on high-risk national security missions that require specialised skills beyond those of regular police units. To join the elite unit, candidates are handpicked from specialised security formations, including the General Service Unit, the Rapid Deployment Unit and the Administration Police.
