Alibaba Group is reportedly preparing a new revenue-sharing licensing model for major commercial users of its upcoming Qwen3.8-Max artificial intelligence model, signaling a significant change in how the Chinese technology giant monetizes its open-source AI ecosystem. According to Reuters, citing people familiar with the matter, Alibaba plans to require large companies that commercially deploy Qwen3.8-Max to share a portion of the revenue generated through applications and services powered by the AI model. The proposed licensing strategy represents a shift from Alibaba's existing approach to its Qwen open-source AI models. Its Kimi K3 model reportedly requires companies generating more than $20 million in annual revenue from software built using the model to negotiate separate commercial agreements. Alibaba's Qwen family has become an important part of China's open-source AI landscape as domestic technology companies compete for developers, businesses and enterprise customers.
