The performance capped off Sumter Players’ 2026 Theatre Summer Camps, a series of hands-on programs that organizers say is about far more than putting on a play. “Since 2008, Kids Week has been an integral part of Sumter Players and has positively impacted hundreds of children’s lives in Americus and Sumter County,” said Laura McConatha, President of Sumter Players. And it’s all because Kids Week director Madelyn Dunston did what Jim Henson does. For Sumter Players, the summer push reflects a bigger mission: keeping young people engaged in creative, skill-building activities during the months when school lets out and structured opportunities can be hard to find. With the 2026 summer camp season behind them, Sumter Players organizers say the goal now is simple: keep growing the program and keep the lights – and the kids – on stage.
