The Black Hole Explorer (BHEX) program is a proposed NASA-led space mission designed by of astronomers and engineers to study supermassive black holes. The goal is to image black holes like those in the Milky Way and M87 with the sharpest images we've ever taken of black holes. It's planned as a Small Explorer (SMEX) missionand if funded would launch in the early 2030s. Sharp images let us see the ultra-fine photon ring around black holes, which would let astronomers test ideas behind Einstein’s relativity in extreme gravity.
