The new system, called ShiftLens, allows users to design and print objects that display different colors, symbols, or images depending on how they are used. Because the system does not rely on electronics, it could also reduce maintenance costs while improving reliability in harsh environments. Looking ahead, the researchers hope to make the design process even simpler by developing software that requires fewer user inputs.
