The U.S. Department of Justice found Duke Law School to have intentionally discriminated primarily against white and Asian students in its admissions practices. “As a result of these practices, highly qualified white, Asian and other students were denied admission on the basis of their race,” Dhillon wrote in the letter. According to the Justice Department, Duke Law School’s application featured questions like how applicants would further Duke Law’s mission. “Thus, while Duke Law’s published policies assert that admissions reviewers did not see racial demographic data, Duke Law directed its admissions staff to highlight applicant information that could be used to advance Duke Law’s racial diversity goals,” the Department said. The Department also found that denied Asian and white applicants held higher LSAT scores on average than admitted Black applicants.
