Named `GOBARdhan', the scheme will run from 2026-27 to 2035-36 and aims to increase India’s production of Compressed Biogas (CBG) nearly ten-fold. Organic waste such as cow dung, agricultural waste, press mud from sugar factories and municipal organic waste can be processed in CBG plants. These materials can produce biogas, which is then purified and compressed to make Compressed Biogas or CBG. The government says India already has more than 200 commissioned CBG plants through various earlier initiatives. The scheme is also expected to encourage better management of agricultural and organic waste while increasing the production and use of organic manure.
