McIntyre’s death is nevertheless the killing most strongly associated with Pemulwuy in the contemporary record. He named no eyewitness, military officer or surgeon and cited no despatch, hospital record, military return or custody report. Instead, the supposed resistance commander sought reassurance about the governor’s personal feelings and accepted the answer of an unnamed intermediary. Without it, Pemulwuy has no convincing military engagement upon which the title of resistance commander can rest.
