Minneapolis leaders say the city needs a more accurate forecast of police overtime spending, as overtime spending has surged past the set budget.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said police overtime is expected to reach nearly $23 million this year, but the department was budgeting $2.3 million.
On Thursday, days before Mayor Frey is set to share his recommended budget, the mayor wanted to add some perspective and context to the issue.
Frey said budget decisions are still being worked out and he did not provide a number.
“I think that’s a fair request, and so we’re now working out in the budget exactly what that looks like,” Frey said.
