Minnesota's Prairie Correctional Facility sold to federal government

APPLETON, Minn. — The Prairie Correctional Facility in west central Minnesota has been sold to the federal government for nearly $500 million.
According to a news release, the Prairie Correctional Facility was part of an aggregate gross sales price of $734 million: the Midwest Regional Reception Center in Leavenworth, Kansas, for $238.4 million and the Appleton prison for $495.6 million.
The Constitution prohibits states and other entities from taxing federal property.
Of the $809,090 total gross property tax bill payable in 2026, the city and township are to receive a total of $521,293.30.
The state of Minnesota is listed on the county tax records as receiving $82,673.99 in 2026.
