Beautiful close up of bird notoriously hard to picture in Herefordshire
['Shaun Webbley']
Hereford Times | News
Jon Mitton took the photograph in Herefordshire, showcasing the small bird known for its striking electric-blue back, orange breast, and sharp bill.
These birds, of which there are about 90 species worldwide, are mostly found in tropical areas.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List categorises the majority of these species as being of "least concern".
However, some individual species, particularly those endemic to islands and forest environments, can be rare or endangered.
The more common Eurasian kingfisher, including the one captured by Mr Mitton, is particularly secretive and relies on suitable nesting banks for habitat.
