KINSHASA, DR Congo – Health authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo have begun screening all 255 passengers aboard the Yingfeng 2 after the vessel was intercepted on the Congo River over concerns about possible Ebola and cholera infections.
Okay News reports that the boat, operated by a Chinese company, was stopped near Bende Bende port, about 65km upstream from Kinshasa.
Authorities have ordered the vessel to remain quarantined offshore in line with WHO protocols while surveillance continues.
DR Congo has been battling its 17th Ebola outbreak since May 15, with the rare Bundibugyo strain responsible for nearly 3,973 confirmed cases and 1,801 deaths.
The outbreak remains one of the deadliest in the country’s history, with more than 17,000 people currently under monitoring for possible exposure.
