The former Bishop of Broome has been acquitted of seven historical sex assault charges after a judge decided there was not enough evidence for a jury to find him guilty. Christopher Saunders is now facing 19 charges after he was accused of indecently assaulting three young indigenous men in WA’s Kimberley region, when he was one of the country’s highest ranking Catholic figures. He has been fighting the charges at trial in the West Australian District Court. His fate is now in the hands of the jury, which will return on Monday as the prosecution begins its closing address.
