IMAGINE HOLDING A standard one-ounce gold bar in the palm of your hand. Valued at more than AU$100 million (about US$70 million), it surpasses the previous Guinness record — a 300-kilogram gold bar cast in Dubai — by more than 220 kilograms. Gold supplied by nine Australian mining companies — AngloGold Ashanti Australia, BHP, Evolution Mining, Gold Fields, Greatland, Newmont Australia, Northern Star, Norton Gold Fields and Pantoro — was combined to create the finished piece. During the months-long project, approximately 1.5 tonnes of raw material were refined into a series of large gold bars. Equally impressive is the bar’s purity.
