News ReleasePORTAGE – The Portage City Council unanimously approved a new zoning framework designed to give city officials greater control over future data center development, establishing stricter standards for technology campuses and requiring additional review for the largest projects. The ordinance creates a new Technology Campus District, making it the only zoning classification where data centers can be developed. Previously, such facilities could be permitted under warehouse zoning, a pathway city leaders said no longer reflected the unique impacts of large-scale technology projects. Under the new rules, technology campus projects must be located at least 500 feet from residential properties and 200 feet from other zoning districts. The ordinance establishes a local definition for hyperscale data centers, classifying facilities exceeding 50 megawatts of power demand or 500,000 square feet as projects requiring an additional planned development approval.
